Comrade Abu Ali Mustafa was killed today, 27 August 2001, in a direct missile attack on his office in Ramallah.

Abu Ali was a symbol of Palestinian resistance and rejection of Zionist colonialism in all of its manifestation. We call on all Palestinians to hold mahrajanat ta'beer to stress our absolute steadfastness and refusal to surrender, and to renew the heroic positions of our martyrs, the latest of whom is Abu Ali.

Abu Ali was born in 1938 in Arraba, Janin, Palestine. He joined the Arab Nationalist Movement in 1955. He was first imprisoned by the Jordanian authorities in 1957, released for a month, then re-arrested and jailed in Al-Jafer, Jordan, for five years. He was released in 1961 and immediately rejoined the Arab Nationalist Movement and was charged with its popular and military operations in northern Palestine. In 1965 he attended specialized training in Egypt. He was rearrested by Jordan in 1966.

Following the 1967 defeat, Abu Ali joined several notable Palestinians in forming the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). He led its resistance activities inside Palestine as it was formed across the Jordan River. Abu Ali was targeted by the Israelis and went underground in Palestine. He later led the resistance forces of the PFLP during Black September.

In 1972 Abu Ali was elected as the PFLP's deputy general secretary. In 1999 he returned to Palestine, and later in 2000, was elected general secretary.

Abu Ali was member of the Palestine National Council since 1968, a member of the PLO's Central Council and the PLO's Executive Committee.

Glory to the Intifadah
