At 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday 31 January 2001, 30 Israeli army jeeps entered the sleeping village of Hares. The soldiers detonated nearly 100 stun grenades, banged on doors, broke windows and made people stand out on the street. They also broke the doors of the house of Hussam Daud, head of the village council. He was then taken from the house in his pyjamas to the Hawara military detention camp but has not been charged. Hussam is recognized by all who know him as a very moderate man. There is no conceivable reason for his arrest, other than the desire to intimidate the villagers.
The next day, from 11:30 p.m. till 3:30 a.m., eight army jeeps entered the village, firing flares and banging on the doors of houses, all the time with their sirens wailing, thus keeping the entire village awake and once again terrifying the residents. Before leaving they arrested one man, only to release him upon exiting the village.
The village of Hares has been systematically harassed by the Israeli army and by local Jewish settlers for the last three months. Its location in an area which Israel plans to annex seems the only reason for this harassment, the intention being to make the villagers' life unbearable so that they leave their homes.
